World Hydrography Day - Līga Cerusa

Behind every graduate is a unique journey. This week, in celebration of World Hydrography Day (21 June), we’re proud to share the stories of our alumni. From the first spark of interest to unexpected moments at sea, our alumni share what hydrography means to them.

Hydrographic Surveyor at "LVR Flote" (LVR Fleet) provides port infrastructure technical services

What first drew you to the field of hydrography?

It was my family, all with maritime education. I followed my sister to Maritime academy, but luckily there was a new course of Hydrography that year.

What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve encountered at sea (or underwater)?

As a surveyor I have an advantage of seeing under the water, even more – to understand the picture. It`s always exciting finding objects. The most valuable was the car in the river, but the latest finding was a ghost fishing net 60m long in the port area.

How do you apply what you learned during the training in your current role?

I`m doing both – surveying and post processing, depending on the need. Sometimes we are doing surveys with our USV. Training is essential for doing the job – that helps to learn new things and make the right decisions.

Which technological innovation excites you the most right now?

USV – this has opened the new horizons. It`s portable, allows surveying waters where is no possibility to access with a ship.

What advice would you give to the next generation of hydrographers?

Never stop learning and listen to experience. This is one of the most exciting professions.
